THE BREAKDOWN Lutein is a carotenoid: a yellow and orange pigment found in vegetables and fruits. Like other carotenoids, such as lycopen and beta-carotene, lutein acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against the free radicals which are believed to cause age-related disorders such as cataracts, macular degeneration and clogged arteries.
In a study, people who ate large amounts of fruits and vegetables had a 43 % reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration.
IN THE BODY Fat helps the body absorb lutein more efficiently.
Withdrawls If fat digestion and absorption is impaired, lutein absorption from the intestine is also impaired. Low level of lutein in the body can bring ealry aging to the eyes and the cardiovascular system.
Natural Forms Lutein is found in many fruits and vegetables including mangoes, corn, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, tomatoes and dark, leafy greens such as kale, mustard, spinach, red peppers. It¡¯s also found in egg yolk.
DAILY DOSE Nutrition experts currently recommend 6mg of lutein a day.
OVER DOSAGE There are no known records regarding lutein overdose.
SUPPLEMENTS Some studies have shown that taking lutein supplements can help improve vision slightly among people who already have cataracts or macular degeneration. |
