Actinic Keratosis

Abnormal
  • Solar or Actinic Keratosis is characterized by small patches of flesh-colored, pink, or slightly darker areas of skin.  These occur on sun-exposed areas of the body (face, scalp, back of hands, neck, and chest) and have a sandpaper feel.
  • Gray, flesh, or pink-colored localized skin lesions
  • Surface of the lesion is flat
  • Surface becomes rough like sandpaper
  • May become wartlike
  • Long periods of sun exposure
  • Light-skinned individuals, the very young, and the elderly are at risk.
  • Made by examination
  • If diagnosis is uncertain, a skin biopsy may be performed.
  • Freezing with liquid nitrogen
  • Fluorouracil cream
  • Masoprocol cream
  • Rarely, does this condition turn into squamous cell skin cancer (1 in 1000 each year).
  • Squamous cell skin cancer
  • Bowen's Disease
  • Seborrheic Keratosis
